Shops in Hereford – a tale of two halves!

The Old Market, Hereford

The Old Market in Hereford was built 11 years ago but is still referred to by many locals as the ‘new bit’. It’s named because it’s on the site of what used to be the city’s cattle market. Back in the day farmers drove cattle through the streets to the market! As recently as 2011 on a Wednesday, the city was full of farmers, livestock wagons and the sounds (and smells) of sheep, pigs, cattle, chickens and all sorts!

The Old Market is a modern outdoor shopping centre with ample parking. Directly off the outside parking area is Coffee Corner. This is one of the coffee shops belonging to local business, The Coffee Cart Company. Ideal for a spike of caffeine before shopping or a cooling smoothie afterwards!

The Old Market has plenty of well known shops to peruse including TKMaxx, Next, Fat Face, Matalan, Clarks, Joules, Seasalt, H&M and more. It’s a spacious shopping area, with plenty of seating to drop onto. Walk past the eateries towards Costa Coffee and you’ll be heading towards ‘old’ Hereford.

Widemarsh Street – link between old and new

The new bit is separated from High Town, the old bit if you will, by the busy city ring road. Cross over by Costa and head off down Widemarsh Street. Head towards M&S, past Primark and you’ll find yourself in High Town, which is a large, pedestrian area dominated by the Old House (also called the Black and White house).

Widemarsh Street has some nice independent shops as well as a few chains. White Stuff and Primark on the chain front. But there’s also an iconic Hereford indie stores.

Phillip Morris

This is an independent department store on both sides of Widemarsh Street, it’s been here since 1845! Established by the Morris family, it was bought by the Jones family in the 1970s and they’re still at the helm. You can buy kids toys, kitchen utensils, country clothing, shooting accessories and all sorts of ironmongery. It’s like stepping back in time!

Oswin and Co

Dates for your diary. There’s an outdoor market in High Town every Wednesday and Saturday. Plants, jewellery, wooden carvings – it’s got the lot.

Top tip. If you and your group go off in different directions – meet outside M&S (all the locals do!) Outside the Old House, there’s a  life-size bronze statue of a Hereford bull with every feature on show (you know what I’m saying?!)  This is a great place for an insta pic and also a good location  as a meeting point if your group splits up.

Independent Day

Just off High Town, along from M&S, is a little passage called Capuchin Lane, which leads into the city’s iconic Church Street with the cathedral at the top.

This is Hereford’s independent quarter, and you’ll find some great shops including:
