Places to Eat in Ludlow
The historic market town of Ludlow is just a short drive from Discover Parks. It’s a foodie heaven with eateries serving local produce with so many twists!
Ludlow is one of the UK’s pioneering ‘foodie’ destinations. Its Food & Drink Festival became a blueprint for all others, and it was once the home to three Michelin-starred restaurants. If you’re looking for places to eat in Ludlow today – you’re totally spoiled for choice!
Around half an hour’s drive away from Discover Parks, up the A49, Ludlow is often described as the perfect, historic, market town. It’s also a centre for culinary delights.
Home to the Ludlow Food and Drink Festival, the town has a reputation for farm to table eateries due to its rich local produce. So, whatever you fancy you’ll find pubs in Ludlow, and restaurants in Ludlow to suit all tastes and pockets.
Once described by Sir John Betjeman (the poet guy) as ‘the most perfect town in England’, you can spend hours absorbing the town’s history or visiting its unique shops. And then you’ll need to eat, so here’s our guide to eating out in Ludlow:
Situated in the Ludlow Assembly Rooms, the Bill in question is Bill Sewell. Bill made history when he opened a cafe in All Saints Church in Hereford 25 years ago. The vibe in both Ludlow and Hereford is delicious homemade food, using carefully selected local ingredients.
Bill’s Kitchen is open from 8am Monday to Saturday, with breakfast served until 11.30. On Sundays, brunch is served from 9am.
The breakfast menu is extensive from full English to croissants and everything in between.
Situated at Bromfield, just outside Ludlow, the Kitchen is part of farm shop complex. Breakfast is served from 8am –11am daily.
Working closely with the farm shop, the menus are seasonal, and the choice is wide. From full English to eggs benedict or locally made porridge or granola to American pancakes with bacon and maple syrup.
Ludlow Kitchen also serves sandwiches, lunches and sweet afternoon treats.
A family owned and run establishment over 2 floors. The USP is loose leaf tea from all over the world drunk from fine bone china. Homemade cakes and freshly ground coffee are also available. Have a traditional afternoon tea or try a nice toasted teacake with lashings of butter (the proper stuff of course!)
Open 7 days a week 9am-5pm.
A family run cafe set just off the mediaeval market square, with a lovely garden area. It serves breakfast from 9am to Noon. With an emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, Breakfast and brunch feature options like halloumi burgers, Welsh rarebit, pancakes, and fresh salads.
Fancy devilled mushrooms on toast? A Nutella pancake stack? Kin’s the place!
Kin also serves throughout the day and is a great dinner destination with a wide choice of wines, beers and spirits.
Overlooking the Mill on the Green, alongside the River Teme and below the Castle, CSONS is run by the Crouch brothers. CSONS motto is ‘locally sourced, globally inspired’. Best known for its breakfast and brunch plates, it regularly ranks among the top eateries in Shropshire.
Open from 9am, the service is amazing, and the food is interesting and unusual. Breakfasts are described as proper breakfasts for when you’re proper hungry! Interesting and unusual because it’s not all about the full English – sample global breakfasts in the middle of Ludlow! Eat from Mexico, America, Lebanon and Scandinavia. You can wash it all down with a Mimosa or Bloody Mary, if you’re feeling a bit wild!
Later in the day there’s vegan, veggie, fishy and meaty choices – all local and organic. This is destination dining at its very best!
CSONS at The Green Cafe Ludlow
The 3rd restaurant owned by CSONS. The brothers say this is all about the quality of the sourdough and the local produce that makes up the toppings.
Shropshire Shrooms, Shroppy Giuseppe, Lahmacun and Fruit and Nut suggest this is no ordinary pizza joint! The sourdough base is made from local ingredients too. It’s getting a reputation – so if you fancy it…make a reservation.
Situated in Tower Street, Jup Jup means you don’t have to wait until the evening to try Thai!
Set lunches are served Wednesday to Saturday between noon and 3pm. You choose your meat and three options from a starter, main and rice. There’s also a small plates menu for a flavour packed lunch.
Maybe not completely, authentically Thai, the ambience at Jup Jup is first class and fun and the cocktail menu is really good. So if you’re looking to ‘Pad’ out your lunch or dinner choice then it’s green (curry) for go at Jup Jup!
Run by Olivier and Lynette Bossut. Olivier has been head cheffing in Ludlow since 1998 and the pair took over the pantry in 2020. Open Monday to Saturday (not Tuesdays), lunch is served between 12 and 2pm and dinner from 6.30pm.
The French Pantry is a taste of France using local Shropshire produce. The feel is properly French…cosy chic, checked tablecloths, that sort of thing! Food is authentic French with an Olivier twist!
So, you’ll find classic French onion soup, escargots in garlic butter, moules mariniere, cassoulets, and coq au vin! There’s tarte tatin, assiette de fromage and creme brulee.
Just be aware that there are no veggie or vegan options.
Now this is really fancy! Another eatery that sits by the River Teme and has fabulous views of Ludlow’s historic castle. Originally a gentleman’s residence, it’s been a hotel since 1949.
Serving lunch and dinner the style is modern British, and as with so many eateries in Ludlow, they focus on local, seasonal produce. Eating here is a grand affair in the two areas that include an Orangery and Terrace Room.
The lunch and dinner menus include classics like beer battered haddock and burger in a brioche bun. For something a bit special there’s chicken ballotine or pan fried stone bass. Bailey’s panna cotta and apple and autumn berries crumble are very tasty for dessert. The Cliffe also has an extensive wine menu, you can try cocktails and there’s a Sunday Lunch service too.
You won’t miss this if you come into Ludlow over the Ludford Bridge as it’s right there – on the bridge! This Grade II listed pub is also a dining restaurant with rooms and stunning views of the River Teme.
You’ll find real ales and great wines available. In summer you can bask on the terrace whilst in winter you can cosy up to the fire. Pub classics with a contemporary twist are on the menu and (of course) many of the ingredients are locally sourced.
4 miles out of Ludlow on the A49, the Salwey Arms promotes local produce from breakfast to dinner. There’s also local beers and ciders and cask ales on tap plus guest beers throughout the year.
Call in for breakfast or stop by for a special dinner – the Salwey Arms is worth the extra 5 minutes in the car!
Run by the same couple since 1999, the Queens is a freehold pub with a reputation for selling good, local ales. Situated in the centre of town, this is an ideal destination for a swift half whilst strolling through the streets.
The 14th century pub, originally a house, is right in the heart of the town. Run by French brothers, Claude & Cedric Bossi who grew up in the family bistro in Lyon. Great British pub fayre and handpicked real ales from local Shropshire brewers make the Church a great place for pint and bite to eat. It’s near the racecourse if you fancy a flutter!
Recently re-opened, this Grade II listed pub is situated on Mill Street, near the castle and market square. Its recent refurbishment includes lots of reclaimed furniture and antique lighting with lots of cosy corners created to enjoy a glass of wine or a pint.
Classic pub grub runs alongside bistro fayre. You can grab a bar snack or indulge in a hearty Sunday lunch. There are lots of food deals including lunch and a drink for £13.
