7th November 2025

There are some great 18 hole golf courses in Herefordshire, Powys and Shropshire, all less than an hours drive from Pearl Lake Country Holiday Park.

There’s a fantastic choice of golf courses in Herefordshire, Powys and Shropshire. Most importantly they’re all less than an hour’s drive from Pearl Lake Country Holiday Park!

Let’s dive in and take a whistle stop tour of local courses that you can take a swing at!

Golf courses in Herefordshire

Kington Golf Club

9 miles from Pearl Lake

Kington is the closest course to all our Discover Parks and is one of the most unusual. It’s the highest 18-hole course in England and has the most stunning views from many of it’s fairways and greens. Although it’s 1284ft above sea level most of that is done in the car getting there! From the course you can see the Malvern Hills, the Brecon Beacons, The Black Mountains, Clee Hills and the Shropshire Hills.

Kington is playable all year round due to fast draining heathland. You’ll find no sand bunkers or water hazards just a bit of a hilltop breeze! The course consistently features in various Top 100 course listings.

There’s a good mix of Par 3, 4 and 5 holes. The longest hole is 14 – 543 yds par 5 and the shortest is 9 at 137 yds par 3.

Burghill Valley Golf Club

14 miles from Pearl Lake

Another course that’s not far from Discover Parks, Burghill Valley is set in stunning countryside. It’s been built on a fruit farm land and started as 9-hole course. It’s got a host of features including orchards, two public roads, 2 lakes and open water ditches.

The club has it’s own golf simulator which can be booked out for practice. You can also book lessons and use the practice facilities like outdoor nets and putting green.

As well as the course, Burghill’s restaurant and bar area is also a real attraction and you can enjoy a drink at the 19th whilst watching players attempting a putt on the 18th!

Leominster Golf Club

12 miles from Pearl Lake

Not far from Leominster on the A49 – from which you can see some of the fairways – the club boasts a community feel and an expertly maintained course. Visitors are welcome and the Shed Bar and Kitchen offers food and drink after a round.

There are some short Par 3 holes – although a domed green on the 14th can deceive. There’s a tricky uphill drive on the Par 5 12th whilst the Par 5 4th can be tricky with 2 oak trees in the middle of the fairway!

The Grove Golf and Bowl

12 miles from Pearl Lake

There’s a really fascinating story to this course, which is right next door to Leominster Golf Club. There are basically 2 9-hole courses to play. The original course Badgers at 2,010 yards is great for less experienced golfers and quick course to play. The Deer Run, designed by Bob Sandow, is the ‘back 9’ and has a links course feel to it.

Both courses are set in rolling countryside with outstanding views. Both have large USGA spec greens whilst the Deer Run is built to the Celtic Manor Ryder Cup course spec of 2010.

The Herefordshire Golf Club

13 miles from Pearl Lake

An oldy but a goodie! The club was established in 1896. The current course was designed in 1932 by renowned Scottish golfer, James Braid. It covers 148 acres of prime Herefordshire countryside. The Shropshire Hills, the Brecon Beacons and the Malverns are among the views from the course. Locals also call it Wormsley Golf Club, which is the parish in which it sits.

One of the feature holes is the 11th. It’s a 408 yds Par 4 with elevated tee box giving expansive views across the countryside.

The club is home to the Causeway Restaurant with a wide menu. There are plenty of practice facilities including a practice ground, putting green, chipping green, bunker, hitting nets. There’s also have a TrackMan 4 Dual Radar studio (indoor simulator) available for hire for members and visitors.

The club offers twilight rates in the summer if you tee off later in the day.

Alexandra Park Resort

27 miles from Pearl Lake

Made up of 2 9-hole loops, this par 73 course has the longest yardage in Herefordshire (6,517) and 4 feature lakes. It’s position, on the A438 between Hereford and Ledbury means there’s outstanding views of the Malvern Hills. The fairways are wide giving the whole course a very open feel.

Relatively flat with just a few gently inclines, and only one hole with a bunker – the danger lies in the ponds. The first is on the 3rd which requires an accurate approach. The signature 10th has an elevated tee looking down towards the island green. The 14th is tough too with a ditch running the length on the right and pond to negotiate after your tee shot.

A fun course requiring some strategy. Winter weather often forces closure so check the website before you travel in the colder months.

Pearl Lake Country Holiday Park

Discover Parks Pearl Lake Golf Course

This 9-hole golf course is set in the grounds of Pearl Lake Country Holiday Park on the edge of Shobdon village in North Herefordshire. Upgraded in 2023, it’s a delightful little course that requires accurate tee shots rather than big hitting. Exclusive to static caravan holiday home owners at Discover Parks, self catering and touring guests – it’s a great base to stay and experience the rich choice of clubs in the area.

Golf courses in Shropshire

Ludlow Golf Club

17 miles from Pearl Lake

Ludlow is another old club, established in 1889. Not far from Discover Parks, just over the border in Shropshire. It still retains features of its 1927 redesign and because it sits on sand and gravel has been called an ‘inland’ links as it plays differently to parkland courses. The course is overlooked by Brown Clee Hill, one of the tallest peaks in the Shropshire Hills.

Drier, firmer fairways mean the ball can run more, and conditions tend to be more consistent even when other courses are soggy meaning it’s good for year round play.

The course sits inside Ludlow Racecourse which runs along the side of holes 5 and 6. The racetrack also cuts across the 9th fairway.

Llandrindod Wells Golf Club

27 miles from Pearl Lake

Another course with an awful lot of views! Designed by James Braid and Henry Vardon it’s been voted in the top 3 courses in Wales. There are stunning views across rolling hills of Mid Wales with a full 360 degree panoramic view from any of the fairways.

The 18th hole is known as ‘Death or Glory’. It’s quite a short Par 4 but there’s a big ravine off the tee. Behind the green is steep drop and in front is a country lane!

Builth Wells Golf Club

28 miles from Pearl Lake

Founded in 1923 as a 9-hole course, it became 18 holes in 1986. There’s a lot of history attached as the club is supposed to stand on the 1282 final resting place of the Prince of Wales, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd and his army.

This parkland course sits just outside the Mid Wales market town of Builth Wells. It features natural characteristics including woodland, ponds and the River Chewfri which runs through the course.

Interestingly, there’s no par 5 for the men, but that doesn’t make the course any less tricky. Fairways can be quite open or littered with ancient trees. The greens are large but the pins can be in awkward positions.
