But just a bit further afield there are some great places to eat in Hereford too – just about half an hour’s drive from all parks. Here’s our pick of some of the tastiest locally owned, independent eateries.
Breakfast in Hereford
To start your day there’s some great places serving breakfast around the city – and we’re not just talking a bacon roll and a mug of tea here (although who doesn’t love the simple life?!).
Rose and Ramble Rose & Ramble – Açai bowls, superfood smoothies & tropical vibes has just expanded from a stall in the Butter Market Traders – The Butter Market Hereford to a fabulously styled shop in Widemarsh Street (between the old bit and the new bit). Locally owned, it serves acai bowls, superfood smoothies, overnight oats with a twist and loads more. From a Brazilian (not the bikini type) bowl to Biscoff Bliss – it’ll liven up your tastebuds at breakfast. (Dog friendly)
Sensory and Rye Hereford | Sensory & Rye is another locally owned, independent restaurant serving throughout the day including breakfast from 8.30. Here you can get a fry up with a twist, or something more unusual like a middle eastern shakshuka. Lots of their food is sourced locally so it’s tasty and sustainable! (Dog Friendly)
Dough Dough café in the heart of Hereford another locally owned eatery that serves breakfast to suit all tastes. From toast or crumpets to the Dough fry up or a straightforward bacon roll – it’s all about the local produce so your food hasn’t had far to travel! (Dog friendly)
Fancy a coffee?
There’s nothing nicer than sitting down for a brew – anytime of the day. All of the above serve great coffee (and tea), and Hereford has all the usual chains if a Nero or a Costa is ground of choice. M&S has a cafe if you’re playing it safe but there are some great independents too.
The Coffee Cart Company is a locally owned, independent that’s been, as they say themselves, grinding away since 1999. You’ll find the Coffee Corner just opposite TKMaxx in the Old Market complex and the Coffee Cart in High Town outside Lloyds Bank. They roast their own beans so the coffee is always cracking but they also do great milkshakes, pastries, paninis and local ice creams. Both locations have lots of undercover seating – and are great places to people watch! (Dog Friendly)
In the Old Market there’s a couple of coffee pop ups including The Sugar Shack Bakery Sugar Shack Bakery & Wholesale with hot and cold drinks as well as lots of homemade sweet treats! Local butchers Heggie’s Heggies of Hereford. Family run high quality butchers from 1956. is about open their second deli and coffee shop selling everything from hot drinks to meat pies and rolls, pastries and kitchen ready meats.
Lunch and Dinner
If you’re after something more substantial, then Hereford really does have it all – quirky, award winning and top-notch tastes for the hungriest of bellies and the most refined tastebuds.
The Yard 3 Award Winning Hereford Restaurants in One Location | The Yard You may have heard the term boxpark – where pop up street food outlets serve their wears from disused shipping containers. They’re dead trendy and the Yard is Hereford’s version (minus the shipping containers – it’s the concept darling!)
Situated in historic Aubrey Street a 3-minute walk from M&S. There’s loads of seating in a covered area with outside heating and a bar. You can then select your food of choice from the adjacent Burger Shop Burger Restaurant in Worcester & Hereford | Burger Shop and Rule of Tum ART or Leaven Award Winning Pizza Restaurant in Hereford | Leaven Pizza which is just over the road. You order at The Yard via a QR code, but you can also eat in the restaurants themselves. Leaven, was recently named the UK’s best independent pizza restaurant by the Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association! (The Yard is dog friendly)
The Beefy Boys The Beefy Boys – The Burger Experts If you love a burger then the Beefies need no introduction. They’re World Burger Championships finalists and winners of the National Burger Awards. Run by four local mates who started burgering and BBQ-ing in their back gardens in Hereford which then went national – they’ve now got 4 restaurants! Best not eat for a few days before a trip here! Burgers include the Dirty Boy, the Blue Boy and the Pastrami Boy, but there’s salads too, a kids menu and veggie options. It’s not to be missed! 2 Bridges 2 Bridges Hereford – Tapas, Small Plates and Sunday Roast in Hereford is hidden away down a small passageway about a 2-minute walk from M&S. On offer is tapas, small plates and sharing platters using some of the best local produce. There’s an extensive cocktail menu, plus wines, lagers and beers. The building is unique and intimate and seated in the sheltered courtyard on a sunny afternoon you can easily while away a few hours sharing tapas and drinking great wines. (Dog friendly)
De Koffie Pot De Koffie Pot Cafe by the River Wye | The Left Bank Village Hereford Head from M&S to the cathedral, then take the quaint little street to the right called Gwynne Street and you’ll find yourself at the gates of De Koffie Pot cafe bar. It’s a huge courtyard right alongside the River Wye with open and covered seating areas as well as seating inside at the bar. There’s a bandstand where you’ll often find local bands playing and big sporting events are shown on a big screen adding to a great atmosphere. It’s become a firm favourite with locals – so you know it’s good! From loaded fries to family favourites like gammon, egg and chips, you can also grab a pizza and a pud or a breakfast if you’re an early bird. It’s also good for coffee and cake! (Dog Friendly).
